Powder coating is a type of painting process that is done by spraying a flour-like substance out of a paint gun. The dry flour-like paint is cured in an oven where the paint becomes hard and glossy looking. This paint is very strong, scratch resistant and long lasting.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove old coats of paint and corrosion from the metal part that you plan on powder coating. A wire brush works for corrosion and paint thinner works for old paint coats. Corrosion or old paint would keep the powder coat from giving your piece a smooth finish and making it look brand new.

    • 2

Clean the part with lacquer thinner after removing the corrosion and dry it with a soft cloth.

    • 3

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Mask off areas of your part that you don't want powder-coated, using masking tape. The powder coat is very difficult to remove, so make sure you know where the paint is supposed to go.

    • 5

Hang the part to be coated. ou could set it on a smooth surface, but hanging usually works best and avoids any marks from a rack or table.

    • 6

Choose the color paint and load it into the cup of your powder-coating gun.

    • 7

Use your powder paint gun to spray the paint all over the part till a nice even coat is achieved.

    • 8

Remove the masking tape before placing the part in the curing oven.

    • 9

Carefully put it in the preheated oven and check every few minutes. When the paint looks wet and glossy all over, allow 20 minutes for the curing process.

    • 10

Put your cured powder-coated piece into use.
